The First Solar Heater in North East India

The solar heater shown here will be installed in our building in November 2009 in time for the cold Shillong weather. Last winter the Chillibreeze staff complained of being constantly cold. Next winter will be different.

The 3D drawing was made by our SketchUp team in Shillong. Using SketchUp we could set the latitude, longitude, month and time of day and study the suns rays into this heater.

The sun will go through the glass and heat the black river stones. These stones will retain some heat and act like a heat flywheel so that some heat flows into the office even if a cloud blocks the sun.

We designed this solar heater to fit the weather and other circumstances. Since the sun rises at 5AM in the winter in Shillong we need to capture heat from 7 AM to raise the office temperature before the staff arrives at 9AM. And since the winter afternoons are often cloudy we needed the rock mass to hold heat for the afternoon.

The glass is sloping up so that the rising heat flows into the office. The glass creates the greenhouse effect capturing the suns heat below the glass.
